Young Adults Stress, Coping, and Health (YAH) 青年人压力,应对,和身心健康
This study was designed to study Chinese young adults’ adverse childhood experiences, current stress status, stressors, coping and regulating skills, social support system, and their physical, behavioral, and psychological health. Stress coping and emotion regulation skills were assessed in the lab using physiological measures including functioning of both sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. Stress status, stressors, and social support were investigated in family and work contexts as well as in other social relationships. Sexual minority males were recruited particularly to examine whether being sexual minority is an extra stressor comparing to heterosexual males, which further contributes to their mental health problems. We have collected questionnaire, observational, physiological data from 259 young adults aged from 21-30. Jingwei Xu, Hang Wang, Houqin Wang, and Fanyi Yu used the data from this project to complete their master's thesis. Yue Guan is also working on a paper using data on sleep and physiological functioning. We found evidence for the protective effects of physiological regulation against the detrimental effects of early adversity on adjustment problems, such as depression, aggressive behavior, and sleep problems. Some findings of this study have been presented at SRCD 2019. We have published one article in Biological Psychology.

Adolescent Social and Emotional Adjustment (SEA) 青少年压力应对与适应
This project aims to examine adolescents’ family contexts and their socioemotional development. We assessed adolescents’ emotional and physiological reactivity to emotional event discussions, their sensitivity to being social excluded, as well as their academic, behavioral, and psychological adjustment, and physical health. The second goal of this project is to study how adolescents’ emotion regulation abilities protect them from the adverse contextual influences. Dynamic Systems Theory will be adopted to examine youth’s emotional and physiological dynamics in the social context. This project, funded by Shanghai Pujiang Talents Program, will ultimately contribute to our understanding of youth’s abilities of handling social and emotional stress and help improve strategies and policies to enhance youth mental health. We have collected questionnaire, observational, physiological data from 78 adolescents and their parents aged from 11-15. Qin Xiao and Yaru Wu used the data from this project to complete their master's theses. We are currently seeking for funding to do longitudinal follow-ups.

Adolescent Depression Project (ADP) 青少年抑郁症项目
We are collaborating with Dr. Xudong Zhao’s research team from Tongji University, and Dr. Yan Chao from East China Normal University. The project, funded by the National Science Foundation of China (NSFC), aims to study how familial factors contributing to depressive disorder in adolescents and young adults aged 12-24, and to evaluate the effects of psychological counseling, family therapy, as well as medical intervention. Until now, a total of 101 families (51 families with adolescents who meet clinical diagnosis of depression and 50 control families) have participated in the project. We have assessed family interactions, autonomic nervous system functioning during family dynamics, and adolescents’ brain structure and functioning to parental comments.

Nanjing MetroBaby and MetroTeen Project 南京都市宝宝和都市少年项目
The Nanjing MetroBaby is a 16-year longitudinal study of Nanjing urban families with young infants and the Nanjing MetroTeen is a 16-year longitudinal study of Nanjing adolescents and their families. Both projects aim to examine socialization processes and child development across a dramatic socioeconomic transition in China, particularly focusing on the impacts of contextual change and parents’ beliefs and practices on child cognitive, social, and emotional development. The projects, led by Dr. Niobe Way and Dr. Hirokazu Yoshikawa from New York University Steinhardt School, Dr. Xinyin Chen from the University of Pennsylvania, and researchers from Southeast University in Nanjing, started in 2006 when the children were 6-month old and when the adolescents were in the 1st grade of middle school. We have just finished collecting the 7th wave of data in 2021-2022 when the children were 15 years old, funded by the NYU-ECNU Institute for Social Development. Dr. Cui’s team is particularly focusing on culture values and Chinese parenting, emotion socialization and emotion dynamics during parent-child interactions, and child emotion regulation and social skills. We are currently preparing the 5th wave of data collection for the MetroTeen project (they are in their 20s now).

Social and Emotional Development in US Families 美国青少年的社会与情绪能力发展
Dr. Cui’s team is working with Dr. Amanda Sheffield Morris and Dr. Michael M. Criss on data collected from the Family and Youth Development (FYDP) project and R15 Girls project, which are focusing on predictors and outcomes of adolescent emotion regulation and parent emotional socialization in the US. We have observational (parent-youth, youth-peer interactions), psychophysiological (ECG, respiration), genetic and cortisol (through saliva samples), and survey and interview data. Dr. Cui is also working with Dr. Amanda W. Harrist on the longitudinal Families and Schools for Health (FiSH) project. Across various projects, Dr. Cui’s team is focusing on children and adolescents’ emotion regulation skills, physiological regulation, and parenting.

Social Emotional Learning and Intervention among Chinese Migrant Children
上海外来务工人员随迁子女社会情绪能力评估与干预
This 3-year longitudinal SEL intervention and learning project involved more than 3000 primary school students, and their parents and teachers. Students were attending 4 schools in Minhang district of Shanghai and were from migrant families in Shanghai. This project examined social and emotional competences of migrant children across time and develop SEL learning programs to facilitate their social and emotional development. We have collected data regarding students' social-emotional competence, parenting styles, teacher efficacy, etc. Our intervention team have finished the development of our own SEL programs for all 5 grades. This project, funded by Save the Children China Program, facilitates our understanding of migrant children’s social emotional skills and contexts of development, and helps us design tailored SEL intervention program for Chinese children. The evaluation showed that our intervention has significantly increased children’s emotion regulation skills, self-esteem, and reduced their depressive symptoms. Yue Guan is using the data from this project to complete her doctoral dissertation, focusing on the sleep patterns of school-age children and how sleep affects their adjustment and academic performance.
